Description

The Dairy Equipment Company held a sales meeting in Sturgeon Bay in the fall of 1961. Gerald Burchard, president of the Berg Company of Madison, a subsidiary of Dairy Equipment, was in Sturgeon Bay to operate the company boat which served as the headquarters for the entertaining of the salesmen. Burchard arrived in Sturgeon Bay early in the afternoon of September 13th. He first checked over the boat and then had at least one drink at a club. Later in the afternoon he had another drink at Paul's Nautical Inn and at least one more with the sales personnel aboard the boat before returning to the club with Mrs. Jean Faber. There he had more than one drink. Later he and Mrs. Faber moved on to Babe and Ray's, where he had two or three drinks. The evening ended at a local hotel where he consumed at least one more drink before the bar closed at 2 a.m. Burchard and Mrs. Faber then went riding in her automobile. The car stalled approximately three blocks from the boat. As it was raining they waited a while in the car before walking to the boat. When he arrived he changed his wet clothes. After borrowing the keys for another car, he set out to take Mrs. Faber home, only to find that the keys did not work. Mrs. Hunt, who was on the boat, then let Burchard use her 1959 Chrysler. Burchard invited LaVerne Kiefer to accompany him in taking Mrs. Faber home.
